AI, Trust & Democracy in 2025

A landmark study on misinformation and international security in the age of AI. HarrisX conducted an experiment across 5 countries to assess people's ability to distinguish between real and AI-generated content of political leaders, expanding on a similar study conducted in the United States prior to the 2024 Presidential election.

"Hello, AI!"

As the race to develop and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) accelerates - particularly generative AI across public, commercial, and political spheres - a new set of questions demands attention: Should we embrace this technology, contain it, or simply try to keep pace?

TheCode and Conviction study is part of an initiative we launched in 2024 duringthe U.S. presidential race to examine how synthetic content influences voterbehavior and public attitudes. That effort sparked a broader, ongoingexploration into the ways AI is reshaping democracy, society, and power - acrossborders, cultures, and institutions.

The HarrisX Code & Conviction Study is based on insights from online quantitative research with more than 3,000 respondents across five countries to assess people's ability to distinguish between real and AI-generated content of political leaders.

Methodology

Drawing on insights from more than 5,700 qualitative and quantitative interviews with young adults (ages 16-24), parents, educators, and employers, the Broken Marketplace Study reveals deep misalignments in guidance, expectations, and access to opportunity. Together, these disconnects are stalling the futures of tens of millions of young Americans.
