Changing the consumer privacy game for 721 million users

Challenge

A leading global technology company sought to understand consumer sentiment and behavior around safety and privacy in the mobile technology space. Having positioned itself as a leader in safeguarding user privacy through localized storage of encrypted and sensitive data, the company aimed to gain a broader global perspective on consumer behavior and expectations, and how these might vary across key markets.

Informed a global privacy campaign and drove adoption of new data protection standards

25k+ consumers surveyed

Across five major global markets

3-year global study

Combining perception tracking, segmentation, and drivers analysis

Approach

HarrisX conducted three annual global surveys with over 25,000 respondents across major markets (China, Germany, France, the UK, and the US), comparing mobile users across operating systems on topics such as privacy, cloud use, AI, and voice assistants. Beyond tracking perceptions, the research delivered advanced user segmentation and drivers analysis to uncover how privacy and safety influence consumer mobile choices.

Results

The research confirmed the company’s leadership position in privacy and security, directly informing a global campaign to reinforce this lead. Findings showed that most users were highly concerned about their data being automatically shared with third-party app developers for advertising purposes. In response, the company introduced an industry-changing privacy feature that allows users to opt out of app tracking, reshaping how personal data is handled for hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
